Every pony harness i see is leather, and leather requires so much more care than nylon, i am wondering, would i be commiting a faux pas if i was to buy a nylon harness for a draft pony? If i cant find one then i will have to make it, and atleast i can find all that i need.

I made a pretty purple nylon harness for myself. Nylon's super easy to work with, and cheap!

"Faux pas"? You mean, by not doing things exactly as everyone else is doing them? Depends on how into conformity you are...

I also have and use a nylon harness. It works very well - I like to wear rubber sometimes when ponying, and the nylon doesn't seem to be as mean to the rubber as leather.

Btw, to the creator of my harness - THANKS AGAIN!!! You know who you are...

It's no faux pas to go for nylon.

I don't care for it myself, but it has a lot to recommend it. As you note the maintenance is easier, and it's a less expensive material. In some ways easier to work with.

For myself I don't mind the care. Once you've done it a few times, the ritual of saddle soap and oil is easy and is part of the scene. And brings back fond memories between times.

There's also something feral about leather, and it has more of a memory. The later I like because harness and other gear "breaks in" to a particular person and fits better, becomes part of them.

But these are just my preferences. The only thing I'd really be careful of with nylon is that since it doesn't "break in" or absorb it's easier to chafe, blister and such. I've found that leather, when sweaty, tends to absorb a bit and "stick" which isn't all bad as it doesn't "skate" as much as nylon will. Depending on the harness design, this can be a factor.

    Enjoy. :)
